Today has been a challenging one. I went about creating a cross-band repeater cable for my radios in the car, so I can use a portable to access repeaters that I would only be able to get from the car. All was going well, and the circuit is built, when I plug it into one radio, then go to plug it into the other and realise that the plug gender is different. Oh. Pull the radio apart, and the cable looks stock.

It looks like this one radio has had custom equipment wired up to it at one point, probably some kind of external display, or maybe a panic circuit or some such - as the cable has been modified quite a bit. So, I now have a working cross band repeater cable - with the wrong gender plugs - and just after DSE has closed :| Guess what I’m doing tomorrow?

As a few of you know, I’m doing a fair bit with WRT54G routers atm. These little routers are cool. They run Linux as their main core, and can be customised beyond belief. I’ll be posting some of my scripts etc over the next few weeks to turn these things into a captive portal with an authorised access setting - great for groups like Melbourne Wireless folks.

As an example, if you’re not registered via MAC address on my AP, and you try to bring up any web site, you get this page. I’ll write up a how-to on this soon and post it. Until then, feel free to contribute ideas!

So after switching to Apple for most of my hardware (I grabbed a 12” G4 powerbook and a mac mini), I’ve been looking for a decent IM client. Back in the Windows world I used Trillian, but when coming to OS X, I couldn’t find much.

I played with Fire - it was missing a lot of stuff, but worked. I was then pointed in the direction of AdiumX.

After importing the Trillian sounds from a windows machine, I found the usability to be very good. Needless to say, it’s now my choice IM client for both the powerbook, and mac mini. If you’re running OS X, and want an IM client, give Adium a go. You won’t need much more.

So yeah, I figured that I should finally do something with this site, as it’s been sitting here idle for quite some time. So, heres a pretty update. :)
